But when emotions run high—stress, excitement, anger, love—your brain subtly reroutes energy to the limbic system. It’s like handing the microphone to your emotional self.

In that instant, logic steps aside, and emotion drives the conversation. You’re no longer speaking what you carefully think—you’re speaking what you feel. This is why in heated arguments, people often say things they regret later. It’s not that the brain fails; it’s that it prioritizes emotional speed over analytical precision.

The Living Flow of Perception

The philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty called this spontaneous expression the living flow of perception. It’s the body speaking, not the intellect—a kind of sensory language that connects you to the present moment. When you speak spontaneously, the line between your thinking self and speaking self blurs. It’s not thought speaking; it’s experience itself.

During every conversation, your brain performs an incredible task: it searches your memories, emotions, and vocabulary hundreds of times per second. Normally, it filters out what’s inappropriate, irrelevant, or socially risky. But in emotional or creative states, those filters relax. Words that usually stay buried rise to the surface.

Nonsense as Creativity

Far from being a flaw, this is actually a glimpse into how creativity works. Neuroscientists studying improvisation—from freestyle rappers to jazz musicians—found that when people speak or play spontaneously, the brain’s imagination and association networks light up intensely. The prefrontal cortex quiets, freeing up new pathways for unexpected ideas to emerge.

So when you say something surprising or even nonsensical, your brain isn’t malfunctioning—it’s exploring. It’s connecting dots between emotion, memory, rhythm, and meaning. In that moment, nonsense becomes a creative act.

Verbal Jazz: Flow Over Perfection

Think of spontaneous speech as a kind of verbal jazz. Just as a musician improvises with feeling and rhythm, your brain uses language to play with experience. It blends emotion, memory, and intuition inside the framework of grammar.

Every slip of the tongue, every burst of unplanned speech, is your body playing the present moment. It’s your whole being declaring, “I’m here.”

Perfection is overrated. Flow matters more. Calculation limits connection. Sensation deepens it.

Maybe, just maybe, those awkward, raw, unfiltered moments—when we say things we don’t mean—are the moments we are most authentically alive.
